Zach Schonfeld is a legal affairs reporter for The Hill, covering the intersection of national politics and the judiciary. His beat primarily focuses on the U.S. Supreme Court and the cases shaping the Trump administration. He previously covered Trump’s personal legal battles, including his four criminal indictments.
As someone who is not a lawyer, Zach is passionate about helping non-lawyers digest the intricacies of legal proceedings as they increasingly become relevant to the political arena.
He reports from courtrooms at every level — from local traffic court to the nation’s highest court — whenever a political figure is involved.
Zach grew up in the Washington, D.C., area and has been following politics since he was a kid. In fact, the first time he skipped school was to head to the Senate chamber to observe a cabinet member’s confirmation vote. Zach graduated from The George Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in political communication, where he worked as a reporter an editor at GW’s student-run newspaper, The GW Hatchet.
